Mix Master Ice has revolutionized the way we listen to hip-hop today. He helped in inventing and transcending the scratch technique. He was honored as an Hall of Fame DJ by the Technics DMC DJ Hall of Fame. However, more and more DJ’s today name both Mix Master Ice and U.T.F.O. as there inspiration for the career, there in today. Below we’ll take a look at a few:

The Source named DJ Premier one of the five greatest producers in hip-hop history, while the editors of About.com ranked him #1 on their Top 50 Hip-Hop Producers list.[4] He also made the “Elite 8” in the search for The Greatest Hip-Hop Producer of All Time by Vibe.

In an interview with XXL Magazine, DJ Premier was asked how his sound evolved, to which he replied, “Marley Marl is my number one inspiration. Jam Master Jay, Mix Master Ice and UTFO. Grandmaster D and Whodini. DJ Cheese, Grandmaster Flash, Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa. Jazzy Jay, even Cut Creator. Seeing them do what they do. It’s black music, it’s black culture, it comes from the ghetto. How can you not relate to ghetto people when that’s the rawest form of blackness? Even though it’s not a good place in regards to the economy and how bad people have it in the neighborhood, the realism’s there, and that’s what we were born out of. So I very much pay respect by doing the same type of music in return.

U.T.F.O. was a Brooklyn, NY-based rap group, comprised of the Kangol Kid, Doctor Ice, the Educated Rapper, and Mix Master Ice. The quartet first met as dancers for Whodini, before forming U.T.F.O. (which stood for “Untouchable Force Organization”) in 1983. Early on, the group referred to themselves as “the Village People of Rap,” due to the fact that each member possessed a specific image (Doctor Ice was the “Hip-Hop Physician,” Educated Rapper was a college student who wore a suit and tie, Mix Master Ice assumed the persona of a ninja since he would “cut things up” on the turntables, and Kangol Kid got his name due to his affinity for always wearing Kangol-brand hats). Signing to the Select label in 1984, U.T.F.O. scored a massive hit single right of the bat with “Roxanne, Roxanne,” which struck such a chord with the burgeoning rap scene that it spawned countless “response” songs by other artists, including “Roxanne’s Revenge,” “The Real Roxanne,” “Roxanne You’re Through,” “Roxanne’s Mother,” “Roxanne’s Brother,” “Roxanne’s Doctor,” and perhaps strangest of all, “Roxanne’s a Man” (in addition, several female rappers adopted the “Roxanne” name themselves, including Roxanne Shanté and The Real Roxanne).

1985 saw U.T.F.O. issue a self-titled full-length debut, which included their own “Roxanne, Roxanne” follow-up, “Calling Her a Crab (Roxanne Part 2),” which failed to match its predecessor’s success; as the group toured alongside such fellow influential rap acts as Run-D.M.C., Kurtis Blow, the Fat Boys, and Newcleus, on a 30-city venue tour called the New York City Fresh Fest. For U.T.F.O.’s sophomore effort, 1986’s Skeezer Pleezer, the Educated Rapper took a brief leave of absence, before returning for Lethal a year later; an album that was criticized by the group’s original following due to its stylistic shift to more racy material (although the anti-drug title track featured a musical contribution from heavy metallists Anthrax, which predated Anthrax’s more renowned collaboration with Public Enemy by several years). But after two more releases, 1989’s Doin’ It! and 1990’s Bag It & Bone It, U.T.F.O. decided to call it a day. In the wake of their split, Doctor Ice issued several solo releases (including such titles as Mic Stalker and Rely on Self); while a 20-track hits collection surfaced in 1996, The Best of U.T.F.O., and a two-for-one CD release of Skeezer Pleezer/Lethal was issued in 2000. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi.

DJ NU-Mark Mentions Mix Master Ice in interview

DJ Nu-Mark waxes eloquent on the art of producing and DJing and how the technology of both has changed.

FLuD Watches recently caught up with DJ Nu-Mark of Jurassic 5 fame as a part of their Beats Per Minute video interview series. Nu-Mark discussed how he first began making beats and spinning records, saying that his love of the drum breaks featured in songs by rock acts like AC/DC and Led Zeppelin lead him to discover the art of sampling.

“I started producing before I started DJing, so I was used to playing drums and mimicking AC/DC and Led Zeppelin breaks,” he said. “When Hip Hop came around and Hip Hop producing made its way to the forefront, I was like, ‘Wow, how do they get their kick drums so low? What is that?’ It really stole all the bad boy image out of the drums in rock, so I was like, ‘Okay, so I’m a Hip Hop head, forget that.’”

Nu-Mark also discussed how technology has changed the art of DJing and sampling records. He says that while he wouldn’t necessarily say that new, easier to use technology isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it has changed the experience of making beats quite drastically.

“I think this generation of producers is definitely missing out on what I went through as a kid, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s batter or worse,” he said. “I know from the DJ side of things, it’s way, way different, because if I was trying to understand what Mix Master Ice was doing on a record, I had to listen to the record, pick up the needle and go back, pick up the needle and go back. I had to keep on listening and try and practice.”

He added, “On the production side, digging is an art unto itself. I loved those years, being able to go to all the flea markets and record fairs and travelling around the world and getting my hands as black as possible and finding the dopest breaks. There’s a lot more things at your fingertips now so you can get an idea out quicker these days I think.”

For those who don’t know, Mix Master Ice was a DJ in the hip-hop group UTFO, most famous for their song Roxanne, Roxanne. Mix Master Ice was also known as “The Ninja” during onstage appearances.

Raised in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, Mix Master Ice got his first touch of the turntables at a friend’s house in the Medgar Evers Projects in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1979 and began DJ’ing in 1980 after witnessing a DJ perform with MCs at an 8th grade school dance.

In the beginning, “DJ Ice” started a DJ crew with The Educated Rapper. After a couple of years of being submerged in the Hip Hop culture they joined forces with Kangol Kid and Dr. Ice to form the four member group U.T.F.O. (Untouchable Force Organization). The group signed with Select Records, which was a Full Force production deal. U.T.F.O. went on to release 5 albums between 1984 and 1991. The Master was influenced by many of the hip hop pioneers before him,.
Mix Master Ice is respected worldwide. The world showed this when he was inducted into the TECHNIC’S DMC DJ Hall of Fame in the year 2000http://www.dmcdjchamps.com/halloffame.asp[citation needed]. Some of the many DJs that have been influenced by the MIX MASTER include: DJ Premier (Gang Starr), Q-Bert and Mix Master Mike, DJ Scratch, Beat Junkies, and The Executioners[citation needed].
On December 19, 2007, Mix Master Ice debuted MMIRadio.com in association with Loud Stream Media. Shortly after the show reached the 15th largest hip-hop internet radio station in the world.

Mix Master Ice recently merged his personal production company, Ice Cold Productions with web media company Loud Stream Media. Now both under Ice Cold Enterprise, Ice Cold Enterprise offers a web division and much more. Ice is also an Honorary member of the Worldwide DJ organization, The Core DJ’s.

He currently lives in Columbus, OH. On Every Thursday And Friday He DJs at a the Second Wind Lounge, A local club. Later on Fridays and Saturdays, Mix Master Ice DJs at Doug’s Lounge, 2440 S. High St. in Columbus, OH.

Mix Master Ice debuted his own personal networking site, M.M.I. Fan Nation (a hip-hop social networking website) and Loud Stream Media which offers plans for independent musicians to gain exposure through internet radio, web presence. He is currently accepting bookings for his 28th Anniversary World Tour.

(Note: Much of the above information has changed, since post date)

Mix Master Ice interviewed by RapIndustry.com

Dj Spotlight: Mix Master Ice: (Still A) Legend In The Game
(Interview below)
By Todd Davis
Rapindustry.com

‘80’s Hip-Hop pioneers, U.T.F.O. [Untouchable Force Organization], comprised of Kangol Kid, the Educated Rapper a.k.a. EMD, Doctor Ice, and Mix Master Ice, are most commonly known for their classic hit single “Roxanne, Roxanne,” which spawned a succession of answer records. Following the release of their fifth and final effort, the lackluster Bag It & Bone It, in 1991, U.T.F.O. all but faded into obscurity — Or had they?

Rap Industry Dot Com recently tracked down the East Flatbush, Brooklyn, born, Mix Master Ice, nee’ Maurice Bailey, who just launched his own social networking website, M.M.I. Fan Nation, to find out all that he’s been up to in the past 18 or so years…

_______________________
INTERVIEW:

In the early days, what inspired you to deejay? What actually made you say, “This is what I want to do?”

In the year 1979, my eighth grade graduation dance had a deejay and emcee. I loved the energy and the vibe, plus Hip-Hop was starting to get airplay on the N.Y. radio. It was a new culture and I wanted to be down.

Initially, how did U.T.F.O. hook up with Full Force?

We all grew up from East Flatbush, Brooklyn. We [UTFO] were the best Hip-Hop group, and Full Force were the best producers in the ‘hood.

Back then, did you think that the whole “Roxanne, Roxanne” thing would blow up as big as it did?

I knew it was a good Hip-Hop record because all the right elements were there. But, because it was the B-Side of the single called “Hanging Out,” I didn’t think it was going to be as huge as it was.

Do you still keep in touch with the rest of the guys from U.T.F.O.? If so, what’s everybody else up to?

Everyone is still active. We all are working on individual projects.

What were some of your most memorable moments, those that will stick in your mind forever, as you look back on the “golden era” of rap?

(Just) the effect that the culture had on me and many people during the late ‘70’s and early ‘80’s; Watching Hip-Hop grow from the days of the block parties to the present day big tours around the world. I remember getting in big arguments with older people because they felt that we were just making noise and that it wouldn’t last. I guess I was right, because it’s still here.

For you, what were the tours like back in those days?

Lots of fun! We had some great fans and we inspired a lot of people worldwide.

How important is the deejay aspect these days, compared to when it first evolved? And, is it at all still relevant?

The deejay is still very important because the deejays help the artist to be heard in the clubs, radio and in the streets. I also feel the deejay was more relevant to the rap groups back in the days. There was less technology back then, so the deejay role was major.

I notice that you are a member on the advisory board for the International Disc Jockey Trade Association (IDJTA) — How did you go about getting involved with that?

Crazy Eddie, one of the founders, of the IDJTA reached out to me. I was honored and became a member.

Did you follow the ‘08 DMC World Championships at all? If so, what was your take on it?

For 2008, the world title went to France with DJ Fly, and second place was DJ Slyce (from the) USA — Big up to Slyce for being an older battle deejay and getting this far in the finals!

What did it feel like to be inducted into the 2000 DMC Hall of Fame?

It’s one of my many awards that I will always be proud of. I was inspired by the pioneers that came before me, and I’m honored and blessed to have inspired many deejays that came after me.

I hear that you are now managing an R&B group called Rated R — How did that situation come about?

I moved to Columbus, Ohio in the mid ‘90’s. They are some of the good R&B talent from the area that have been working hard for years. They reached out to me for management, and I’ve been working with them and getting them ready for the industry.

Are there any other artists that you are currently managing?

Yes, many artists from this area. There is a lot of talent from the Midwest.

What artists do you listen to?

I’m a true deejay at heart, so I listen to it all.

What is your take on the lack of sales, digital downloads, file sharing, and bootlegging — All the thing that are going on in music right now?

People are getting music for free due to mix-tapes and free down-loads — Artists will have to adapt to the times.

What would you like to see changed in the music game?

More balance in Hip-Hop. There is more ignorance being promoted than positive energy.

Do you like what VH-1 has been doing for the legends who paved the way with the VH-1 Hip-Hop Honors special(s)?

It’s cool. It’s always good when the youth can see and look at the past and where the culture came from.

Where do you see the future of Hip-Hop heading?

More globally and maybe to other planets! It will continue to grow because the youth are the future — They love rap music and they will continue to create new styles and new technology.

What’s next for you?

This summer will be my 29th deejay anniversary and my 25th anniversary in the music business. I’m also looking forward to helping other artists to achieve their goals.

Do you have any last words?

Thanks for the interview and the love! Peace & Blessings to all my fans around the world, my family, The CoreDJs, NerveDJs, IDJTA, Mixshow Blast DJs, Tools of Wars, U.T.F.O. & Full Force, All The Pioneers Of Hip-Hop — And, none of this would be possible without the blessings of The Creator!

Mix Master Ice in 2000 Technics DMC USA DJ Championships

“The hottest DJs in the United States will converge on New York’s Union Square on Saturday (Aug. 19) for the 2000 Technics DMC USA DJ Championships, event publicist Ever Kipp said.
